Bring your hat and sunglasses! \n\n\n\nRobin Calderwood oversees the training for the Sierra Central Canine Search and Rescue Team’s canine group. The team is certified by the California Area Rescue Dog Association (CARDA). It operates 24/7\, ready to deploy at a moment’s notice to assist in locating missing individuals. The team consists of volunteers. As the team leader\, Robin’s responsibility is to ensure each member receives appropriate training based on their current stage in the search-and-rescue process. Robin takes great pride in the dedication and commitment shown by each team member and is confident that\, with ongoing training and collaboration\, the team will continue to make a positive impact on the community. \n\n\n\nRobin and the team will discuss various aspects of working with a canine in search and rescue\, including the training required to teach a dog to search for missing people. Mark your calendars for August 21st — the Museum of the Sierras is hosting an evening of live bluegrass with The Bluegrass Element\, a band that has earned its stripes on some of the region’s most beloved festival stages\, including the Grass Valley Festival\, The Great 48\, and The Good Old Fashioned Festival. The band brings together a solid cast of players. Mike McDonald handles guitar\, bringing fabulous original songs and his gift for songwriting to every show. Doug Carlton adds the rich\, resonant voice of the Dobro\, Steve Hall drives things forward on banjo\, and Jonathan Hall lays down a steady foundation on bass. Rounding out the lineup is mountain local Stevo Gillett on mandolin. These boys put on a fun\, energetic show\, mixing their own songs with some of the best tunes bluegrass has to offer. There’s plenty of great picking\, a few surprises\, and the kind of easy chemistry that only comes from years of playing together. The Museum of the Sierras is a beautiful setting for an evening like this — good music\, good friends\, and the tall pines overhead. So bring those friends and come ready to really enjoy yourself. A skilled guitarist and singer\, Pemberton branched out on his own\, getting his start as a country and gospel musician at local joints like the Red Caboose Café. \n\n\n\n Pemberton describes his style as traditional country. He performs songs popularized by artists like George Strait\, Merle Haggard and Alan Jackson\, and says he occasionally throws in a Blake Shelton or Luke Bryan cover. \n\n\n\n\nJohn Pemberton\n\n\n\n\nOur Friday in the Pines concerts have brought our Shaver Lake community some great talent\, are always fun\, and continue to be FREE to the public. \n\n\n\nThe amphitheater is a perfect venue for picnicking and relaxing while listening to great music. What a different world it was. The Qualls side of my family owned quite a bit of land and was in the cattle-raising business. Actually\, while my Dad helped with the cows\, his paycheck came from the Biles and Jameson Lumber Company\, where he was employed as a” cat skinner.” I have the first paycheck stub showing that after working 80 hours and both Saturdays\, his net check was just over $200. It was decent money for those days\, and when the snow started in the fall\, it gave Dad winters to work with his horses. \n\n\n\nMy mother\, Clara Gassmann\, was first married to Jimmy Marshall in the 1930’s. She built both the wood-framed building and later the brick building that was and is still Marshall Station. The marriage did not last. In 1943\, she married my father\, Otis Qualls\, who was just back from a year in the U.S. Army. She leased out the store and moved to the ranch with my dad. \n\n\n\nMy first memories are of our family either being on the ranch or being in the mountains in the summertime. I started school at Sierra Elementary\, but in 1952\, troubles at the store caused us to move back to Marshall Station. It wasn’t all bad– first indoor plumbing. I then attended Auberry Elementary\, Sierra High\, Reedley College\, and Fresno State. \n\n\n\nI met Lynda Nankervis\, my future wife\, at a “Howdy Dance” at Fresno State in the fall of 1966. Yep\, a “Howdy Dance.” We dated almost continuously until our marriage in 1969. Having joined the Army in the fall of 1968\, I was home on leave after graduation from Officer Candidate School when we said our vows. Then it was back to the U.S. Army for two more years. The second year I was deployed to South Korea. Lynda used that time wisely by getting her teaching credential in secondary education. \n\n\n\nLynda’s first teaching job gave me flexibility when I went searching for my own job after getting out of the military. Not wanting to find a job where I would be subject to transfer\, I took a job as a warehouseman for a small family-owned business in Fresno. The owners of the business turned out to be a wonderful family. Over time\, they set the table for me to own my own business and establish a lifetime business career. Flooring supplies may not seem exciting\, but the business grew and provided a 30-year enjoyable and profitable business. \n\n\n\nOur son\, Brian\, is about to turn 48. How can that be? Seems like he was just attending Sierra Elementary\, but I know there had to be time for Sierra High and Fresno State along the way. He is now finishing his 2P1 year at Laton High School. DESCRIPTION:Date\n\n\n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n\n\n9:30 am – Check-in at Museum of the Sierra parking lot\n\n\n\n\nPrice\n\n\n\nFree! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHike Description: This will be an easy-to-moderate hike\, 1 -3 miles in the Shaver Lake area near the museum. Join us for a safe\, family-friendly mushroom identification hike centered on curiosity and learning. A mushroom identification hike focuses on learning\, observation\, and appreciation—not collecting or consuming. Participants will explore local habitats\, study mushroom characteristics\, and practice safe identification techniques while leaving all specimens undisturbed in nature. \n\n\n\nWe will meet in the Museum parking lot at 9:30 am\, then adventure! \n\n\n\nAll hikers should wear the proper hiking attire and are encourage to bring bug repellent and sun protection.  \n\n\n\n***No pets please!*** \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSponsors
