Hikes for History #1 | Potholes Trail with Jim Gregory

June 21, 2025 @ 9:30 am 2:00 pm

Potholes Trail w/ Jim Gregory

Hike Description:

Potholes Trail – Camp Sierra to Big Creek Canyon
3-mile round trip – moderate level, meet at the museum parking
lot at 10 am – Pack snacks & water.

Hike Leader – Jim Gregory
Jim Gregory is a fourth-generation cabin owner at Camp Sierra.
The hike is going to a place where potholes are a good thing. The Potholes are popular for generations of Camp Sierra campers and cabin owners. There are pools at the bottom of the Big Creek Canyon that the water has dug out over the eons. Depending on the spring rain and snow, the natural water slides
spilling into calm pools may turn into white water if the flow is too great, making it too dangerous for swimming. The Potholes
Trail starts at the parking area of Camp Sierra and is to the right of the Abednego cabin. The trail meanders down to the bottom of the canyon and ends at the bottom of the canyon.  The water comes from SCE’s Dam Four, the forebay of SCE’s Power
House #1 in the Big Creek community.

The trail destination is popular for families to day-hike to swim and sunbathe during summer. Upon returning to the trailhead, the nearby BBQ area at Camp Sierra will be available for hikers to gather after the
hike and enjoy their own lunch.  The Camp Sierra store may be open to enjoy ice cream.

We will meet in the parking lot of the Museum at 9:30 am, then carpool to hike location.

All hikers should wear the proper hiking attire and are encourage to bring bug repellent and sun protection.
