Buffalo Soldier Encampment at the Museum of the Sierra
August 13, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm
Buffalo Soldier educators from the Buffalo Soldier Mounted Cavalry Unit, based in Three
Rivers, CA will have an encampment of tents that re-create a 19th Century U.S. military
bivouac. Representatives in historically accurate uniforms will educate and inform the
public about the challenges and contributions of segregated African American troops on
the American frontier. Educators will speak with the public and have period replicas to
accurately depict the life of a 19th Century soldier.
Between 1891 and 1913, Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks were the home to, and
patrolled by, troopers from the 24th Infantry and 9th Cavalry. These men were
instrumental in many duties including, building roads and tunnels, trails, fire breaks, and
security against lumber poachers. Before being assigned to the Central Sierra, many of
the Buffalo Soldiers were veterans of the Spanish American War and Philippine
Insurrection.
Arriving in the Sierra Nevada only 26 years after the abolition of slavery, these men are
often considered the among the first park rangers in the nation.
The Museum of the Sierra, which is situated between Yosemite and Sequoia National
Parks, is building an exhibit to recognize and honor this little-known chapter in American
History. The Museum is working on an interactive, touchscreen display to cover the
many aspects of the lives of the Buffalo Soldiers.
The Museum of the Sierra is also planning a 6000 square foot, Education Center Expansion
.
