SJ&E Railroad Grade to SCE Powerhouse in Big Creek Led by Jim Gregory
2 miles round trip
Level: Easy
Join Jim Gregory on the Museum of the Sierra’s first Hikes for History of the season! This is a fairly level and easy hike, approximately 2 miles long, at a pleasant elevation of 5,000 ft. The hike will take you from SJ & E @ Shaver Crossing to SCE Powerhouse in Big Creek. This hike will tell about the history of the SJ & E Railroad from its ambitious beginnings in 1912, when the Railroad became an important part of the Southern California Edison
Company’s power system. The 56-mile SJ & E Railroad was built in 157 days and was known as the crookedest railroad ever built. It was used to furnish transportation for the construction of Big Creek, the largest Hydro-Electric project in the world at that time.
Hikers must bring their own food and water and are encouraged to wear proper hiking attire, bring sun protection and bug repellent.
Jim Gregory is a fourth-generation cabin owner at Camp Sierra.
