Presentation Summary – Listen to Jim Dixon discuss his personal experience as a member of the Fresno County Sheriff Mounted Posse Search and Rescue (SAR) team and how the SAR teams utilize horses and mules to navigate the rugged wilderness. Jim will also discuss fire and safety tips and provide resources available in emergency situations.
Speaker – Jim Dixon hitch-hiked to Shaver Lake in 1969, when he was just 18 years old, to work at China Peak. In 1971, Jim met and married his wife, Debby, while she was a waitress at Angelo’s Bakery. The two share 3children and 13 grandchildren!
Over the past 53 years, Jim worked and volunteered for the community and beyond. In 1972, he began working in the logging and road building businesses then became a General Engineering Contractor where he built several projects in the Shaver Lake and Tahoe mountains. He was also an EMT for the first Shaver Lake Ambulance, a 1953 Cadillac Hearse converted to an ambulance, volunteered for SLVFD, and participated in a few other volunteer groups. In 1975, he began a snow removal business and sold the company in 1989.
In 1993, Jim build the Shaver Lake Chapel and has been the Pastor ever since. Although he continued to live in Shaver, Jim also traveled to other countries, such as Ukraine and Poland, volunteering to build water and construction projects. He then worked for the Nordic Ski Patrol team and had the priveledges of rescuing 2 men off the top of Mt. Whitney at night in 2005.
Over the last 10 years, Jim joined the Fresno County Sheriff Mounted Posse Search and Rescue (SAR) team and assisted with local and backcountry rescues. During the 2020 Creek Fire, he helped rescue both large and small animals. Although some animals were lost, no human lives were lost. That was a true miracle.
